The History of Ukraine
Ukraine has long held close ties with Russia. Before the early 1900's, Ukraine was a satelite "protective shield" around the Russian empire. These close ties with Russia in the past explain many things for the present. Most importnatly, Ukraine has many open trade and tariff agreements with Russia, allowing freer commerce. For example, Ukraine pledges to import nearly 90% of its total natural resources from Russia. This is all because of the close histroical ties with Russia, and the Soviet Union.
During World War One and Two, Ukraine changed governmental hands dozens of times. In fact, in 1919 alone Ukraine changed hands 4 times. This has all lead up to a severe mistrust in government authority, and a lack of acceptance among the world community.
After World War Two, Ukraine remained a communist satelite and shield for Russia, fearing American invasion. Any economic or political policy implimented in Russia, carried over into Ukraine as absolute law.
Ukraine was finally recognized as an idependant Nation from Russia in 1991, during which many of its constitutional ammendments were passed. These ammendments mark the beginning of a new era in Ukraine. They show a true transition into a separate nation. The constitution is the basis for all law in Ukraine, much like in the United States.
To fully understand the current political and economic turmoil in Ukraine, one must understand that Ukraine's history is marked by bloody battles and takeovers, governmental changes and crackdowns. The constant change of hands has deeply scared Ukraine, and explains the current political mistrust amongst its people.
